Meet Nolasean - Art styling case study
A little while ago, I was contacted by Nikki, the artist behind Nolasean, she was working on her new website, and like many creators that contact me, was tired of taking their own photos with their phone or camera and not giving them justice, not having the time of creating nice set-ups for them.
Unless I get in touch on a post, I always ask how people heard of me, where have they seen my work, interestingly on that case, it was through my work for Tiger Hornsby (the cocktails!) that she found out about me. Let’s hear about her and what having professional photos taken has changed for her:
° If you had to describe your art and brand Nolasean in four words?
Eclectic, PopArt, All-Embracing, Fun
° What is your favourite thing about being a freelance/independent creative?
Being able to plan my own day, do my own thing and walk my dog. Iv had many years of working 9-5, shift work, working for companies and other people. It's so freeing when you're doing something you love and it's yours.
° What do you hate about being freelance/independent creative?
It can be a bit unstable at times, especially with the current economic and political happenings BUT there is always a way to make money if you REALLY need it.
° What professional photography brought to you and your business and why?
So much! I think it's important when you starting a small business is to delegate tasks to other people. You can’t be perfect and great at everything. Choosing someone who gets you as a person and your work is so important, which is why I choose you.
The styled photos from someone professional have lifted them to a whole new level, it's really made them pop and stand out. It's so important to have good photos of your work and what you do as most our lives exist online now, having great photos creates that illusion of reality and tactility beyond the screen, it allows people to connect with you more deeply.
° Anything you'd like to promote, new art, market date?
I will be at the The Thoughtful Night Market on Saturday 16th of November: https://www.facebook.com/events/680740095735988/
(Entrance in to the event is £3.50, with a percentage of every ticket being donated to our chosen charity this year - St Oswald's Hospice.)
° Just for fun, do you know any French word?
A few, but my favourites are poisson & poulet. When I was 16 I went on holiday with a friend and her family and we drove through France, got lost, super hungry, found a McDonalds and they didn’t know much english and I wanted a chicken burger and I kept telling my friends mum poulet and she kept saying poisson to the point me and my friend were shouting "poulet poulet!" in the back... I ended up getting a very soggy fish burger instead.
Some final words on the job itself, I always make sure to offer all the options to clients, and because I don’t want to sacrifice quality over someone not having budget, but not work for free either, I try to come up with different solutions, here for instance we both decided it would be quite minimal sets to go along with the product, that needs to remain the star of the show, and not to change the set (aka background and props) too often to narrow the shooting time down and keep the costs affordable.
